I'll have a new student start classes and I'll sometimes ask, "So, you're
an artist?" Or, I meet someone new and we get to chit chatting and they
mention that they use to paint, draw, sculpt... And I say, "So, you are an
artist". The usual (almost always) response is, "Oh no. I'm not an
artist." And I say, "Yes you are." As creators we are all artists. You must realize that the term "arts" or "artist" has gone through many transitions throughout history. Once known as manual labor with low regard, to mastery of a craft (which by the way did not include visual arts for a long while), the term artist has been modified time and time again, a lot of which has to do with culture. Today, the term is used for broad general purposes as well as specific studies. Basically, an artist is someone who engages in creative activity. OMG!, that pretty much covers us all. So whether you see it in yourself or not, you are an artist. Whether you're a confident artist is something else. I've encountered so many who create beauty in this world through their lyrics, music, paintings, crafts, and much more, but they will not call themselves artists. Their reasoning is because they're not very good, or they have had no formal training, or they do not have a college degree. What is this reasoning really? Lack of confidence, a.k.a. FEAR. Know this, we are all good at something. We all have talent (a special ability or aptitude) in some area. You may be good at math, money management, public speaking, decorating, cooking, cutting hair, polishing nails... I could keep going, but how about you finish the list for me. Bottom line, we all have things we are good at. We all have special abilities. Just because you don't recognize it, doesn't mean someone else doesn't see it in you. As a child, I dreamed of being an artist but found it difficult to call myself one. As an adult, I dreamed of being an artist and still found it difficult to call myself one. Then I listened. I heard my friends saying I was an artist. I heard them introducing me as an artist. I heard others greeting me as an artist. It dawned on me that this is how people viewed me. Wow. For those of you who know me, I tend to talk a lot. So, I'm going to wrap this up. I have been blessed to see the light. I have had in my life very supportive people, family and friends that have helped see me through my insecurities and gain confidence. I want to do something to give back. What do I have to give? I've thought about it for months. Here goes... What I have to give...Art lessons. Specifically, drawing lessons. I have had students come and go, leaving with more confidence than they came. I am so thankful to have the ability to provide this. I have had people sponsor deserving children with drawing lessons in the past and I love this sentiment. I'd like to have you join me in sponsoring a child. For every lesson you sponsor, I will match. Yep, that's right. I'll match it.That's it. Thanks. Click here to sponsor. |

What's My Name? … I've made a decision.Narrowing down the whole branding process has taken more work than I thought. Then I got really busy... (for a couple of years. OOPS!) But, it's been fun. I will be rolling out the new look very soon. Therefore, this site is still under construction and will remain under construction until Kathy decides she's tired of playing with it and hires someone to do it for her. But so far, she's enjoying the ride. So please be patient as things change up a bit. Pop back in and see what's new. |
